Does your stomach grumble an hour or two after a meal? Perhaps when you wake up you feel a growl. This is quite common for many of my clients. Often times it is simply confusing hunger with thirst.
The two powerful cravings occur in the same part of our brain called the hypothalamus. It’s in charge of regulating quite a few things:
- hunger
- thirst
- mood
- physical intimacy
- body temperature
- sleep
If the hypothalamus is out-of-wack we won’t be happy campers. It also can lead us to eat more calories than we should. This will lead to putting on unwanted weight. This makes it very important to stay hydrated. As obvious as this sounds it’s advice worth repeating.
We live in a world full of distraction. One way to simplicity to our day is keeping water nearby throughout the day. The cliché phrase “out of sight, out of mind” couldn’t hold truer by how much water we drink.
Next time you find yourself with a grumbly stomach, down 8-12 ounces of water. Quench your thirst first and then see if your stomach continues to make noise. If so, you know it’s time to chow time.
