He’s the goat. The only six time Super Bowl champ in NFL history. Married to a supermodel. The envy of every straight insecure man in America.

What is it that makes Tom Brady great?

How does he age at half the rate of a normal man?

How in the world is he still slinging footballs down the field in the NFL at the age of 42 years old??

I do not like the New England Patriots. I root for them to lose almost every single game. I am a born and raised Buffalo Bills fan. The Pats broke the hearts of us Atlantean‘s in a game I will not discuss (the Atlanta Falcons are my adopted number two team). But I cannot hide my admiration of Tom Brady. I think he’s freakin’ awesome!

He seems to be the hardest worker in the building. His “team centered“ approach to his job makes him relatable for me. I love how he’s determined to be the champion!

I’m a big fan of Tom Brady, not the New England Patriots. There is a big difference between the two.

What do tomatoes have to do with all of this. Well, I decided to figure out why the GOAT has such strict restrictions on his diet.

Why Doesn’t Tom Brady Eat Tomatoes?

According to Boston.com, here’s his reasoning:

“I don’t eat nightshades, because they’re not anti-inflammatory. So no tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, or eggplants. Tomatoes trickle in every now and then, but just maybe once a month. I’m very cautious about tomatoes. They cause inflammation.”

What I think is important to know about inflammation?

Inflammation is a byproduct our body is trying to protect us. In the case of a disease or bacteria infection, inflammation is a good thing. However, with examples such as arthritis  there is no impending doom, thus proving inflammation useless and harmful to bodily tissue.

Bottom line, there’s good and bad inflammation.

What foods are anti-inflammatory?

Take a look at this graphic from Harvard Medical school. These are food specifically listed as anti-inflammatory by Harvard!

TOMATOES are listed as ANTI-INFLAMMATORY?!?!

What the heck Tom Brady? You’re avoiding these nightshade veggies because your an over-obsessive diet-crazed person. You probably sleep in kale pajamas and floss your teeth with broccolini too!

Inflammation caused by nightshades is not backed by research. Although some people, such as Tom Brady, claim they experience joint pain and inflammation when they eat the staples of a Mediterranean diet such as tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers.

Why I Think Tom Brady Stays Away from Tomatoes?

I believe this is because he has noticed a difference in himself when he eats night growing veggies and cuts them out of his diet. It is not important whether or not he actually experiences inflammation. What matters is Tom Brady is determined to do anything to keep acute inflammation caused by dietary decisions to an absolute minimum. The level of attention he gives to small details has led him to become the greatest quarterback of all time.

My Takeaway

To be great you have to obsess over your craft. This was true for Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, and William Shakespeare. This is the case with Tom Brady.

It does seem like Tom Brady has a life outside of football. It makes me believe he must have exceptional discipline and time management skills. It is possible to spend a substantial amount of time focused on your craft, while making time for things most important in life like family, faith, friendships, and philanthropy.

Be like Tom Brady. Trust your intuitive instinct. If this means cutting out tomatoes, do it! Your inner self will always lead you to greatness.
